Serotonin

What is Serotonin?

It is a chemical that has a wide variety of functions in the human body. It is sometimes called the happy chemical, because it contributes to wellbeing and happiness.

As a neurotransmitter, serotonin relays signals between nerve cells, or neurons, regulating their intensity.

It is believed to play a key role in the central nervous system (CNS) and in the general functioning of the body, especially the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Where does it come from?

Serotonin is made from the essential amino acid tryptophan. This amino acid must enter your body through your diet and is most commonly found in foods such as nuts, seeds, eggs, salmon and cheese. Tryptophan deficiency can lead to lower serotonin levels.

What does it do?

Low levels can result in mood disorders, such as anxiety or depression.

It is also has an effect on sleeping and digesting. This chemical is responsible for stimulating the parts of the brain that control sleep and waking. As the precursor for melatonin, it helps regulate the body’s sleep-wake cycles and the internal clock

A 2007 study found that people with depression often have low levels of serotonin. Serotonin deficiency has also been linked to anxiety and insomnia.
