Physical Activity in Adults

Physical Activity in Adults

Shocking statistics

FACT 1- 44% of adults never do any moderate physical activity

FACT 2- 13% of adults are sedentary for longer than 8.5 hours a day

FACT 3– Physical Inactivity contributes to 1 in 10 premature deaths.

FACT 4- In England only 30% of over 75 year olds meet the physical activity recommended limits

FACT 5– In N.Ireland 19% of adults watch TV for more than 4 hours a day at weekends

FACT 6– People who are physically active have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

To gain the maximum benefit from exercise the exercise must be regular, aerobic and involve the major muscle groups steadily and rhythmically, so that the heart rate and breathing increase significantly.

Physical Activity guidelines published by the BHF recommend the same amount of exercise in the over 65’s as the 19-64 year olds.

Aim:

1.  To be active every day

2. Each week do 150 minutes of moderate activity

3. Try and do 75 mins a week of vigorous activity

4. Twice a week some of the exercises performed should aim to improve muscle strength

5. All adults should cut down on the time they sit

6. In over 65’s do twice a week balance and coordination exercises
